The first permanent European settlement in the region was on the Halifax Peninsula. The name means "Great Harbour" in the Mi'kmaq language. The Mi'kmaq name for Halifax is Kjipuktuk, pronounced "che-book-took". At the time of Confederation of Canada, about 1000 Mi'kmaq lived in the Colony of Nova Scotia. The Mi'kmaq have resided in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island since prior to European landings in North America in the 1400s and 1500s to set up fisheries. Halifax is located within Miꞌkmaꞌki, the traditional ancestral lands of the Miꞌkmaq peoples.
